Good morning everyone, I am new to turkey hunting and was looking for a new shotgun (really I was just looking for any guns, but this is my excuse and I'm sticking to it) and came across an 870 super mag at a local pawn shop. It is in like new condition and has a 26" barrel, 3 1/2" chamber and is fully camo'd for $300. Does anyone have any experience with this camo finish, how well does it hold up? Also any thought on the price? Seemed good to me compared to new prices that I have seen. Thanks

The 870 is a fine gun.......prolly the most popular pump made today.
If it has the 26 inch barrel, it is most likely the SPS Super Magnum Camo model. They retail for around $550.
If that is the model and the finish is the factory finish, you'll get YEARS of wear out of it.
Check the barrel, the action and MAKE SURE it will extract the hulls clear every time you crank it.
At $300, you're prolly gettin a pretty good deal.

Thanks h4f1, that is the model and factory finish on the gun. Didn't think to ask about chokes, but planning on getting a comp-n-choke for it. The action works smooth and the barrel is clean and shiny so I have a feeling it will be coming home with me!

BUNCH of people make chokes for those Remington barrels.
You should have NO problem finding a nice set of chokes for that gun.

I shoot an 870 at turkeys. Oops, WTF, I mean I carry an 879 when I go turkey hunting. Been so long since I have had the bead on one, I cant even begin to remember clearly anymore. The 870 is a fine weapon with many accessories available too. And they are hard to tear up too, take lots of abuse and still work

One specifically for buckshot and one specifically for steelshot.

Bad news. Went to pick up the 870 but got held up for a couple of hours. Wnen I finally got there, the guy said he didn't think I was coming and sold just before I got there. Anyway, local Academy has the 870 Super Mag in black synthetic for $279. What is ya'lls opinion on the black versus camo shotguns for turkey hunting?

I like the camos guns although I do not have one. I hunt with 2 shotguns and they seem to work real well without the camo. ;D

Im with Hunt4 I dont think the color is going to make it fire different ;D Im positive you can do just fine with the black and not the camo.

My black synthetic worked fine on ducks last year. I'm sure turkeys aren't any smarter ducks and geese. ;D

Thanks guys, think I will save myself the extra $100 or so and get the black. Besides, that just gives me another $100 to spend on some other gun that I just have to have!

Hey Shorthair, I just noticed your pic there. I have a 2 yr old female German shorthair. She is a great dog with pretty good bloodlines. Just wish I had had the time to train her or get her trained. She will be in heat soon, so if I can find a male around here (not alot of them in South Louisiana) I plan on getting her bred and keep a puppy to train.

The Camo finish wont make a difference hunting. The only thing about them is (this was on a knight muzzle loader) the oil from your skin will erode the camo finish. If you dont wear gloves all the time while handling it the camo will wear off.

I had a Brittany one time whose mother was a hunter and the daddy was a biscuit eater. I had to teach him to retrieve! I don't mean the commands or being steady to wing and shot. I mean I had teach him when I threw something he should get excited and go after it! And don't keep a male!!!!! I've had female bird dogs and male and I'll never have another male. The dog in the picture don't live here no more. He wouldn't even obey the shock collar. Of course one of my friends has Max's brother he is a crackerjack bird dog. So maybe it's just me?

Flat dull grey or black is fine. Camo don,t mean anything to game, but movement and gloss shine do.
