Hideeho good neighbors.
It's been awhile since I've had time to bore yall with my going-ons. Looks like things are slow here at SHF so I'm gonna fill yall in.
My Family
In October, after I accepted the new job, we moved 5 hours south to be closer to my work and to be closer to my mom and dad so they could help out with the new baby. It's been good for me because after 23 years in Rogers I am now back to my hometown in S. Arkansas. It has been hell for my wife and daughter. Rogers was all they new. My daughter is a Jr in HS so it's like starting all over for her. My wife now has to deal with two teenagers and a 2 yr old for 2-3 weeks at a time while I am in the Gulf of Mexico. We have my family here which helps but her friends are now 5 hours north. My son's only gripe is that we are having to hunt public land here this year until we get on a lease. I have never hunted public land in my life, now I know what all the bitching is about...I hate it. My 2 year old, Wyatt, is doing great, being a typical 2 yo. He's gonna be a stud.
My Job
The BP oil spill decontamination project is over as of last week. It was deemed a huge success by BP (of coarse). Here's how big oil works...As of the 1st of December, there were still 300+/- boats to be cleaned, putting us at least a year out. Right before Christmas, BP notified us that the decontamination was almost complete, with only 2 barges left to clean. IT WAS A HOLIDAY MIRACLE! 300 boats just disappeared, or got filthy rich via a BP check. Anyway, they worked from August to December and the worst injury we had was some guy's chair broke at lunch and he bruised his tailbone. I ended up as the lead Safety Coordinator and spent more time writing permits and doing paperwork than anything else but it was cool. I think I am off to a Chevron rig as of Jan 10th. That should be interesting.
Hunting
As mentioned earlier, this season was a bust. I knew it would be. We ended up having to hunt a small WMA close to the house. It started out well, Dalton shot a small buck opening morning. After that, the few times we did get to hunt when I was home we saw nothing....until yesterday. Yesterday was the last day of our gun season. It was raining and I am sick so we decided to just drive out to a huge cut-over and sit in the truck watching down two lanes, hoping to catch a deer or hog crossing. We sat until 1030 and I decided to teach Dalton the finer points of road hunting. Now don't get upset, it wasn't like we were driving down county roads shooting deer out the window of the truck. We drove down pine plantation lanes looking for deer. We did see two so we got out of the truck and put the stalk on them, Dalton walking down one lane, me down the other. After a short walk, I jumped them up and they ran right past Dalton....BAM, BAM....he got them both, another small buck and a doe. My daughter has shown an interest in hunting this year also. We've sat a stand twice, both times seeing deer but she doesn't want to shoot anything other than a big buck. I told her that was ok but it may take a long time for her to find one. She is ok with that.
I did not fire a shot all year. I have two months of bow season to go but doubt if I'll get much hunting in.
So, there you have it in a nutshell.
