Just about killed my first wolf yesterday. I was hunting deer in a northern zone Monday and Tuesday and wasn't seeing any deer in an area that has a huge population of white tail. Now I know why I'm not seeing them, there's a few wolf packs roaming the area. Anyways I'm hunting a cut block that was logged this past winter. There's deer and moose sign all over but nothing real fresh. I get on a skid trail and notice a huge wolf track in the mud going down the trail, its real crisp and I'm thinking it was just made. I have a good view of the block so I start glassing and right away catch movement at around 500 yards. At first I thought deer because of the color but the gait was wrong, only thing is I can't see the head and low brush is keeping me from identifying what I'm looking at. I kept tracking it with my bino's and finally it steps out where I get a look at one of the biggest wolves I've ever seen, I've seen over 2 dozen. I was expecting a deer and was taken aback a bit by this wolf. At the angle it's traveling it is now less then 200 yards from me. It knows I'm there and it makes a line for the timber. I was surprised by the amount of ground it could cover at a trot. It finally dawns on me to get the scope on it and be ready for a shot. Just as it makes the timber line I let out a howl and it stops broadside and looking right at me. I was awestruck with his beauty, he had a big ruff the color of golden honey with white tips and his body was tan in color with black tipped guard hairs and a body that looked as big as some doe's I've shot. I was just starting to feel for the trigger when he stepped into the timber and was gone. I was a little disappointed on how I reacted and not taking the shot but that didn't last long. I thought how lucky I was to see this gorgeous animal. I know guys who have hunted many more years than me and have never seen a wolf.
