We had hunted all morning without seeing a thing, I was bowhunting and Dalton and his friend Brandon were squirrel hunting. Like I said in my previous post I was going to let arrows fly freely today but I was having a hard time finding anything to shoot at. We met back up arond 11:00, the boys did not shoot any tree rats and I had not seen a thing. We were walking back down the mtn to the truck when they spotted a doe across the creek in a small field. I told them to sit there and I would try to stalk to the creek. About halfway there, I realized that even if I made it to the creek without spooking the deer it would be a long shot, guessing around 75 yds. I was only about 50 yds from the creek but I was stumped on what to do. I looked back up the hill at the boys and there was a deer that had stepped out into the road between us, 62 yds from me, probably 100 yds from them. It never crossed my mind NOT to shoot. Because of the terrain, the boys were in no danger. I let the arrow fly and it hit just a tad bit forward but almost perfect. The deer ran past the boys, out of my sight but they got to see it do the death wobble and fall. They both said watching that go down was the coolest thing they had ever seen. We left it there and went to go get the truck. Once we got to the truck the other deer was still in the small field so I drove across the creek and it ran up the hill and stopped. I got out, nocked an arrow, and walked up to the edge of the woods. I had that deer dead to rights at 35 yds but there were several factors that made me not shoot it. One, that deer I just shot tagged me out. Two, I'm not fond of cleaning more than one deer at a time anymore. And three, something just didn't feel right about it with the boys there. Anyway, the doe I shot was HUGE, every bit as big as Dalton's youth hunt doe, I'm gonna say bigger just to piss him off.
