Thank you guys for you comments! Well i hunted a tripod stand down in a creek bottom where we had seen alot of sign for a mature buck. I wasn't there but about an hour when this boy stepped out in a bottom behind me. Here in Texas the phillery is up in the creeks so he was feeding and i couldn't see but a dark body down there, abunch of brush was covering his antlers. I watched him for 30 minutes when he started back up the rim behind me. I got a few good looks at him and knew he was a good cull deer. I was huntin with my custom Remington Model 700 in a 25/06. Have used this gun my whole life, dad got it made in 78 and its a great shooter. I put my first shot right square in the shoulder, and if you may all agree this puts a deer down and they are done quickly. I rarely shoot a deer anywhere else. But he ran like nothing happened about 30 yards up the rim into some thick brush, i knew by the sound of the shot that it didn't sound right. He stopped in a clearing and i put another right square in the same shoulder and he went down. I called my dad and told him what happened and i was all feverrred up which i usually do haha So dad told me to stay there and wait on him. He got there and i told him the deer was down up on the rim, and he said "grab that 30/30 out of the truck that you shoot so well" and we started in on him. We got down in the bottom and looked up where he was, but noticed that he still wasn't finished. All we could see was his horns because he was on a rim above us. We waited for bout 30 minutes thinkin he was bleeding out, but he started to get to his feet! Dad told me if he stands up you put one in him. So he stood up and i shot him again with my 25/06. Now 3 shots in the shoulder, he fell to his knees and stood back up again! I said give me that 30/30 and put one in his shoulder yet again and he went down. 4 shots now in the same shoulder! Dad said "go to that deer right now, son". So i went up the rim to where he was, and i saw that he was down, dad followed. We stood over him about 5 yards from him and his head was laying under a thick mesquite tree. We stood there for a few seconds and noticed his eyes were clinched really tight and he was breathing hard and fast. Dad said "I hate to have him suffering like that, i wish i had my pistol with me" Bout that time dad said "oh crap"!!!! That deer took a deep breath and came out from under the tree. This all happened so quick, but dad stepped back and squeezed the trigger off of the 25/06 and it was out of shells, i already put 3 of those in the deer! The deer gathered his feet, with his ears pinned back and headed right for dad, when i swung my trusty 30/30 up from the hip and shot him right square in the jaw, it went through the back of his head and struck his left hind quarter. Dad said he saw the dust kick off his head. It all happened so fast i just reacted. I turned around to dad to see his eyes as big as christmas, and said "damn dad that was cool!!!" haha it was a hell of a hunt! That buck was all rutted up and ready to defend his territory!
