Thanks guys. This was the first good morning I've had...meaning gobbling and coming to my calls. They have come in quiet this year. I called in a longbeard w/ a hen the 1st day, but he didn't get close enough for a shot from my x-bow. I've also called in 2 jakes quiet this year. Yesterday morning we fished from 1 AM til 6 and caught a couple of 23" stripers. Then I began listening for turkeys. Heard one in the 2nd area we listened (from the boat). I climbed up a very steep and loose rock hill and got set up. He worked just the way he was supposed to except he came around the big fallen tree I was worried from the wrong side and I couldn't get a shot. He strutted and gobbled, but was about 40+ yards and in a little thick area. I just sat there while he looked for the hen. He eventually walked off and I called quiet but aggressive and he quickly walked into gun range. 23 yards and didn't make a twitch after the shot. The old H & R single shot works pretty good. Hope to make it back down for more fishing this week.

What model H&R is it? I have one that I've thought about turkey hunting with, but it kicks like a mule. It dislocated my shoulder once shooting at a squirrel.
I hunt with the ole NitroHunter, but I'd put it up against any "turkey gun" with a expensive choke as far as the pattern it shoots.

It is a handi rifle (I have the 30/30 barrel and a 223, plus the 12 ga barrel). It has the synthetic stock and is VERY light. It kicks, but I only shoot the shotgun a few times/year. My 1300 kicks too. The lightness while carrying and especially HOLDING waiting for a turkey more than makes up for anything else. I am a firm believer that you don't need an extremely tight choke to turkey hunt...just wait until they get in close.

I've been seeing and hearing plenty birds, just no good shots. Got busted by a gobbler that came in silent behind me this evening.

Nice bird. They are behind schedule here too. Most are still looking for ladies. I did find one on a nest of 13 eggs Sunday though.

Thanks, what's been going on down there? Not much. I had big dreams of hunting every weekend this turkey season and never got to go once. Looks like you get the title for this one.......congrats.

Thanks guys.
It was a strange year. I worked gobblers just about every day, but they were tough. My heart was just not in it after missing with the x-bow the first day.

I know what you mean. I never went back after calling in the 2 long beards for Hailey.
