Hey folks.Long time no post.My puter croaked but I found my way back.
Made a trip out to Saskatchewan this week to try and shoot a big buck,my first time ever to go there and it definately won't be the last.We hunted up by Biggar where the current world record white tail was shot, the Hanson Buck, actually got to meet and talk to Milo Hansen for a few minutes.Anyways,we hunted the first day without seeing any shooter bucks except for mule deer, which we couldn't shoot as non residents.Met up with my friends Brothers and Dad that evening and put a plan together for the next day.One of the brothers had taken a 167 buck here last year and he had a good idea where to look.
First light had us looking over a couple of bucks but none we wanted. We spit up to cover more ground and at 8 o'clock I see a huge 5x5 buck chasing a doe out in a stubble field. We flip for the shot and I lost the toss so bud gets first crack. The buck stops out at what we thought was 300 yards, too excited to use the range finder .Bud busts a cap and the bullet hit right under the buck and sprays him with dirt, you should of seen him jump. The doe peels out of there with afterburners on and the buck in close pursuit, they make it to the brush line and no time to get on him for a follow up shot.We ranged the actual distance and it was 481 yards.Lesson learned, don't get excited by big antlered bucks and forget to use the range finder especially when we had the time.
An hour later I see a big 4x4 buck bedded just below the top of a knoll. When I first glassed him he didn't look that big and I was only seeing his rack from straight on.The buck got nervous and stood up turned his head and gave me a profile and showed how big he really was. This time we range him at 379 yards and I decide I'll take him.I flip the safety off the 338 and the buck decides it's time to leave and I notice he only has 3 good legs, looks like one is broken on the front.I couldn't get on him before he got over the top of the knoll and we never saw him again. The rest of the day didn't offer us anything else in the big buck dep't and we had to leave by mid day the next day so I decided to take a meat buck if I saw one in the morning.
Hunted the same area the next morning without seeing any bucks, so we went into town for breakfast and decided to to give it one more kick at the cat and headed back out.At 11:30 I was coming back to the truck when a car stopped and two guys got out and started banging away at a buck.I was watching through my bino's and watched the buck stumble plus I heard the bullet hit the deer. These two heros got back in their car and drove off,I'm thinking WTF!!They never even went to check for blood,I was pissed about this.I watched the buck make it to a brush line and decided to try and find these guys to let them know they had hit it and where it was but it was fruitless,I didn't know which way they had gone.I went back and found the buck very much alive and decided to take him as to leave him suffer a very unkind fate.Shot him in the neck at a 100 yards and tagged it,my hunt was over.
My pard got a nice meat buck a half hour later, about the same size as the buck I killed and his bro shot a fork horned meat buck. These bucks have really big bodies, all of them went over 200 pounds live weight.
This is my buck. You can see the broken leg where the other two bone heads shot him.
