With DS being gone, I thought I'd do my part. I took Dalton and his friend to the woods this weekend for our rifle opener. In one word, it was NUTS!
I saw 9 deer in all, 4 bucks, 2 of them aggressively chasing does. I ended up shooting a strange looking 6 point Sat. pm. It had decent mass, about 12" wide, but it had three on the left main beam with no brow tine and two on the right main beam with a brow tine. He was birddogging a doe hard and I shot him the first opportunity I got. Needless to say, he wasn't as good as I thought he was when I found him (ground shrinkage). He was 90 yds downhill from me in a ravine and never got a good look at him, I just saw the three on the main beam and decided to shoot.
Now here's the odd part. Dalton missed two deer, a doe on Sat and a very nice 8 pt this morning. I shot his gun when we got back to the truck and it was 8" high at 75 yds. I still think he should have drawn blood on the eight point, I was with him when he shot, but I'll let him use that excuse for the miss.
I'll post pics as soon as I get them from my buddies camera.

I didn't have a camera but my wife's cousin did and took a few pics. I keep asking him to email them to me but he hasn't yet. They are supposed to be over here for Thanksgiving and I'll see if he can bring the camera with him. If not, I cut the horns off and I can take a picture of them. The deer was a very large bodied deer, est. live weight around 150.

Ok, finally got a few pics. My wife's cousin isn't the worlds best photographer, plus he was more interested in the "process" of killing/cleaning a deer than anything. I measured the horns, they are 13 1/2" wide, if that matters. Getting ready to skin Glamour Shot

Good lookin' deer, but the guy with it sure could use some work! ;D If yall only knew what I had to go thru to get that deer out of the woods. Ok, since yall asked... I shot it right at dark sitting beside "The stump". The stump is a place at the end of a long finger that you can sit and see wayyy down into the ravine that runs up one side. It's the best spot on the ranch except you better be willing to put in some work to get the deer out. I can't get my 4 wheeler down there without driving it about 8 miles around the other side, across two other property lines, and coming in from the bottom side. If you decide to drag it up the way you walk in, it's about 250 yards up a 70 degree pitch, some parts much steeper, all of it is loose rocks. I've dragged a few deer out of there, it takes two people at least an hour. After I shot the deer I walked down to look at it and decided right then I was NOT dragging it out. So I went and got Dalton and my wifes cousin and went back to camp. The toilet had stopped up so Chris said he would take Dalton into town with him to get a plunger and I'd would go get the deer, after we ate dinner. It had been a couple of years since I had been in the back way to the spot and it was terribly grown over with sycamore and cedar saplings, almost to the point I couldn't see the road anymore. Oh, did I mention it was the coldest night of the year so far, around 24 degrees, which made for a miseralbe ride. It was nice when I got back, Chris had a good fire and mixed me a stiff Knob Creek and Dt Coke. Have you ever tried to clean a deer with someone holding the flashlight that has no clue what to do? I was cold, wet (4 wheeler threw me while I was trying to cross a creek), tired and getting drunk so I really wanted to get the deed done quick. Didn't happen. Glad you asked?
