I don't think harvesting them will hurt as long as you break them off and not pull them up from the ground. I have always heard to put them in an onion sack or something as you walk so the spores will fall to the ground.
The 6 we found yesterday (and 2 more this morning) were in an area where I used to throw the water that we soaked them in. Finally paying off.

I've never heard them called hickory chickens. Where did that name come from?

Just another nick name. If you go into Harlan, Bell, Knox Co. that seems to be what most call them there.

Haven't had the chance to look yet but this weekend I am spending all weekend at my property. If this year is like any other, I'll find 100-300.

Well, most of my spots were still flooded so I didn't find as many as I had hoped. I would guess that we found around 80, mostly small white/gray and a few larger yellows.
Dalton can spot them a mile away, damn young eyes.
Here's a cooking tip if I haven't already given it: Take the smaller, firmer morels and stuff them full of that processed "squeeze cheese" by sticking the stem of the cheese can into the stem of the mushroom. Then flour and fry as normal. It's different.
