www.pheasantsforever.org/quail/Quail Forever is an offshoot of Pheasants Forever and I understand that they've done great things in pheasant country improving habitat and working with landowners and state agencies to help the wild bird populations. I went to a meeting on Tuesday night and heard several things that I liked. First of all, they realize they'll have to concentrate on improving habitat on public ground if they're going to get support and involvement, instead of working to improve private land that you'll never hunt. That's HUGE in Texas where $8 - $10/acre leases have made public land is almost as scarce as the wild quail that used to live on it. That's serious money for 16 weeks - or 8 weeks if your lease manager won't let you hunt birds until deer season is over. Second, the money that's raised locally stays local instead of going to pay for salaries and perk hunts that those of us paying the freight will never be invited to go on. There are other groups that are set up to improve habitat and QF was careful to point out that they aren't here to compete, but to work with other groups when possible. I know we've got a few upland folks on the site and I thought I'd spread the news. There's a page on that link and you can see if there's a chapter in your area.
