hollow out a log to make a rabbit gum/box/trap? I had one years ago but I found that log... I've made some out of 1x6's , but the log consistantly caught more rabbits for me.
ideas anybody? hammer and chisel seems like alot of work

How deep does it need to be hollowed out? I would say use a chainsaw, with several cuts side by side, then knock the pieces out with a hammer. Other than that, I think it would be easier to just find an already hollow log. Should be some in your woods somewhere.

Ok, an old thread but I'll still offer my suggestion. If you still need an idea, it may help.
The chainsaw suggestion sounds the best to me, but I'd take it one step further.
Cut the log in half length-wise and then hollow out the two halves using the chainsaw. When you have it done, use some decking screws to attach the two pieces back together. If you don't want to use metal screws you could drill a hole and use a dowel rod with some wood glue instead.

Hey Mud, Jamie is cutting trees for a living now. I can get him to save you some hollow limbs if you want.
