saw today on a guns and ammo or some shootin' show that if you put electrical tape over the barrel it protects it from anything like dirt or water going into it if you accidently drop it or trip or something...accidents do happen.
they also said that it doesn't affect the shot whatsoever because the air in the barrel pushes it off before the bullet actually gets to the end.

I've also heard of using balloons or condoms in the same way (especially on muzzleloaders.

the balloon is the best way,been doing it here in pa, for 30 years. my dad started me doing it. dont use the tape.it comes off when wet and leaves a sticky stuff on your barrel.  |

i've done the condom thing for my muzzleloader but never thought about doing it for any other gun...i always took it off before i shot....the tape you don't have to.

We have used the electrical tape trick for many years. My uncle taught me that. I have also heard of the balloons/condoms trick.

Condoms and rubber bands. I learned that trick in the Army. Always had a hard time explaining to my 1st wife why I always had condoms in my ruck.  |

I use a small square of seran wrap and a rubber band over the end of the barrell. Works great and is cheaper than condoms.
