Took the dog and drove about 4 hours toward the panhandle to a WMA that gave up 2200 or so birds last year. It's a little over 28,000 acres and it's pretty rough country, but it's a Parks & Wildlife habitat project and it's pretty impressive. Saw more turkeys than I could count.
Temp's were at about 43* all weekend and Saturday started with a drizzle and turned into a steady rain which ran us back to the motel and ended the day. We bumped a few coveys and had a bird chasing incident which will need some attention but all in all, the dog's got more quail hunting ability than I do. It was cool watching her work.
Sunday morning was cold but dry until about 10:00 when teh drizzle started again. We couldn't find the birds until we went back to the same pasture we found them in Saturday. We picked up a larger covey than Saturday's and had a good time pushing them around until the rain came on again and it was time to go. It's no place to be in a 2WD. It's red sand and it drains well where it can, but it's trouble where it doesn't.

Sounds the dog has recovered nicely. I wish we had some wild quail around here still.
