and boy do i hate HS(hevi shot). has anyone seen what the pellets are in hevi shot? it aint pretty, when i cut one open i found shot sized from #6 and up none was rounded infact most looked like blobbs. i will give you they hit harder but they don't fly right.
Kent matrix, now that is some fine stuff there. had a buddy shootin that stuff and when it hits they are DEAD and the best thing i have found from that stuff is it mushrums, yes i did a little disecting, but that is what i want to see. a clean kill and a mushrum pellet plus when i cut one of them open they were round like steel.
Now steel, we all don't like it and all these after market chokes they have DON"T help from what i have seen. I shoot the cheap stuff in winchester the expert. I like it for steel and i shoot 3" #4. I have killed geese and ducks with it not a problem. Now what i have found after talking with freinds and reading up on it THROW AWAY THE MODIFIED CHOKES!!! put in a improved and you will have the most awsome pattern you will ever shoot. Unless your sky busten. i am killing duck with out a problem from 10 yards to 40 yards (not sure about any farther becuse i wait ;D.
more testing to come next year MAYBE

Steel shot sux! Hevi-Shot works but dang is it expensive. You guys are about to make a believer out of me on the 3" shells. I have been shooting 3.5's all year and have killed two woodies and one teal. I have shot and hit geese and wood ducks that just flew away mad. I read a thing my friend who swears by 3" shells put me on to. It basically said that the same charge on the smaller shell gives more energy and hence more knockdown.
I'm gonna get some of that Kent Faststeel and take what I've got leftover from this year and do some patterning. I have had the worst year I've had in a long time on waterfowl.

That's interesting about the deformed pellets in the Hevi Shot. That would make for a poor shot string and you haven't even pulled the trigger yet . I myself have no trouble with steel, but my shots are in close and #2 shot kills the big northern mallards dead and the honkers fall to it also. I'm only using 2-3/4" shells also.

thats how i started out about 12 years ago puddle jumpen. Then i found out how many ducks would come to calling and the art to calling and decoy set ups, The watching the dog work Then is when i knew i was hooked. Gave up most of deer hunting to hunt ducks.

I'll never quit big game for ducks, but I might think about it for upland game ;D.I love watching my dogs work the feild, got 3 of em.
I picked up a dozen magnum goose decoys last year at a yard sale but haven't used them yet.I need to hook up with someone with some field experience and learn how to set up a decoy spread and do some calling.
Everyday on the way home from work I see the geese feeding in the stubble fields and try to pay attention to what they look like.Right now they seem to be in family groups of no more than a dozen and spread all over the field.
