I guess I owe New Orleans an apology. According to our president, we've all been treating N.O. like a dirty stepchild all these years.
Now we're going to open up the national wallet and pay billions to them to rebuild homes that should be covered by insurance and to train them to find jobs. Easy to see why 6.2% of them would be unemployed as of year end 2004. If there were only any restaurants, bars, casinos, hotels, or major river ports around there, maybe more people would have had jobs on their own.
I guess it takes a natural disaster and widespread unpreparedness on the part of a city that sits on the gulf coast 8 feet below sea level to point out to me that I'm a bad American. I feel guilty to think that people could pay homeowners premiums like I do and that the insurance companies would pay to rebuild their homes. I'll gladly pay my increased premiums to ante up for State Farm's losses. I also accept responsibility that school and city buses sat parked while thousands of people either refused to or couldn't evacuate.
I AM sympathetic to the loss of lives, homes, and property. I don't understand how this event is any different from hurricanes in Florida or along the Atlantic coast, but I'm glad my president was on TV to point out my failures to me.

I can't understand how it's my fault when the city is so totally unprepared. There were massive failures on the part of the city and the state and now they're blaming the federal govt. Then W stands up and takes responsibility and drags me under the bus with him because I'm apparently a racist for treating the people of New Orleans poorly.
I've never even been there.

I know bro....
It seems like if you were the *Governor* of a State that borders a coastal region, you'd have a plan to be executed in just such a tragic circumstance. Wouldn't that be part of the job description? Does Bush not have enough to worry about running the rest of the planet? Or when he took the Oath of Office was there something about New Orleans he missed?
