Shorthair mentioned it in the Around the Campfire forum and I figured it really deserves discussion.
We've got a situation locally in which Jerry Jones pushed a vote through the citizens of Arlington to move the Cowboys there. It involves building him a new stadium on the city dime and they're going to bulldoze houses in order to make room for Jerry's new stadium.
One minor detail...the homes are currently occupied.
The city has hired a development co to "secure" the land and they've offered their opinion of fair market value for the homes plus $20K, give or take, so those people who are now considered squatters can pick up and start making mortgage payments somewhere else. They've made deals for 22 of the homes but there are about 50 homeowners who are telling them to get bent. Give 'em hell, good people!
Remember that the American Revolution and the war of Northern Aggression were fought over similar issues. If it were some public works project, then let's fight about that one later. This is entirely about a billionaire using a city government to kick good people out of homes so he can make more money. BTW, there were site available in surrounding areas where Jerry could've built without displacing anyone.
As a nation, we've begged for this. We've let owners of sports teams hold us hostage while they threatened to move our beloved teams somewhere else where the people are easier to push around. If it's your team, you build the stadium. If someone wants to use it for a convention, rape them on the rent. That's free enterprise, but this is scary. When are they going to decide that your home is in the way of the public good?
The TX legislature is considering new laws to protect property rights. Utah, Nevada, & Colorado passed laws limiting or banning the sezure of property under E.D. A measure to ban E.D. in Georgia failed.
