US Sen. Miller decries 'contrition' over inmates 13 May 2004 22:19:08 GMT WASHINGTON, May 13 (Reuters) - Zell Miller, the only U.S. Senate Democrat who has endorsed President George W. Bush for re-election, denounced on Thursday "this national act of contrition" over the abuse of Iraqi inmates.
"Why is it that some in this country still don't get that we are at war -- a war against terrorists who are plotting to kill us every day?" asked Miller of Georgia.
Speaking on the Senate floor where members of both parties have decried the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners, Miller made a reference to the beheading in Iraq of American Nick Berg, a 26-year-old civilian contractor.
"Why is it that there's more indignation over a photo of a prisoner with underwear on his head than over a video of a young American with no head at all?" Miller said.
Miller's comments came two days after Republican Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma declared he was "more outraged by the outrage" than by the treatment of U.S.-held Iraqi inmates.
"I stand with Senator Inhofe," said Miller, who heads a "Democrats for Bush" group. Miller said while he did not condone much of what happened behind prison walls, he refused to join "this national act of contrition over it."
Bush has apologized for the inmate abuse at Abu Ghraib prison outside Baghdad and said the acts were the "wrongdoing of a few."

No hunt he is a real Democrat. Observe carefully as they are a dying breed. We still have a few left down this way but not many.

I like his thinking on this. I heard Inhofe's comments the other day and I was relieved that someone actually had the sand to stand up and say what a lot of their constituents are thinking.

Zell Miller is a fine American and he makes me proud to be a Georgian as well! He is the kind of person that truely represents the old south. I was very afraid when Roy Barnes appointed him to finish Paul Coverdell's term. But he has made me proud to say "That's my Senator!" He wants to come home and be here in Georgia with his family and friends and I don't blame him one bit for that. He is not going to be easy to replace. I will say that as it stands right now Mr. Herman Cain sounds like a fine replacement and that is who I will probably be voting for in the primary in July.
