Interesting while I was researching US currency, I came across the fact that this was required to be on US currency by law in 1955. The first currency for it to appear on were 1957 series $1 silver certificates.

Again just like the pledge this appears to have been placed to differentiate us from "the godless-communist".

And what was wrong with that? ;D I trust in God. He is the only thing you can count on 100% of the time. Men or governments established by men? Not too reliable in my experience.
