"A Hunt Above" had a young man (age 16) that contacted us about a hog hunt. This young man has Spina Bifida. His name is Logan, and is from West Monroe, Louisiana .
Over 250,000 Americans are in the Spina Bifida Community. An estimated 70,000 people in the United States are currently living with spina bifida, the most common permanently disabling birth defect. Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect that happens in the first month of pregnancy when the spinal column doesn’t close completely. There are 60 million women at risk of having a baby born with Spina Bifida. Everyday, an average of 8 babies are affected by Spina Bifida or a similar birth defect of the brain and spine. Each year, about 3,000 pregnancies are affected by these birth defects.
"A Hunt Above" had an opportunity to take Logan and his father to Alto Texas, at a ranch called Cedar Springs Hog Hunting Ranch, on the weekend of May 27th 2006. Mike Macko (Director) and Tony Holeman (Co-Director) also went on this trip. They arrived on Friday evening and met Ric and Deb Dannelley, the owners. They talked for a bit and decided to try to get Logan on a stand that evening. Tony Holeman (Co-Director for "A Hunt Above") and Logan saw about 20 hogs that evening, with one that Logan really wanted, but the hogs were a bit skittish and the opportunity never presented itself. Afterwards they enjoyed supper and talking by the camp fire. Deb, one of the owners, surprised Logan with a chocolate cake, which was Logan's favorite.
The next morning Tony and Logan positioned theirselves in a stand early, and Mike Macko was set up in a blind close by, which was put up the night before. While waiting for the hogs they had 17 rams (doll sheep) come out with 3 being trophy size rams. They watched these rams until a good size hog came out. This hog would have gone 150 to 175 pounds. Logan was very excited. Logan waited for the right chance to harvest this hog and Logan shot and the hog squealed and took off. They called Ric by radio and he and his helper Ted came out to their stand site. The whole group looked for over an hour for this hog, but was never.
They went back to the camp where they ate breakfast and talked about the morning hunt. After breakfast, Ric suggested that they ride around the ranch with hopes of seeing a hog for Logan to harvest. They loaded up in a "Mule" and went to several stations located on the ranch. Logan had another opportunity to harvest an "one ear" hog and missed again. Finally, on the last station Logan was presented with another opportunity in which proved successful. Not only did Logan harvest a hog, but he got two...with only one shot!! Logan was very happy and "A Hunt Above" thanks our Sponsors and Cedar Springs Hog Hunting Ranch (see link in "Sponsor" page) for the chance to take this young man on this hunt. Knelling beside Logan is Ric Dannelley, one of the owners of the ranch.
By the time the group got Logan and his father to their home, Logan's story had grew to an outstanding story. Logan told his dad that he was not only one up on his dad, but two....with only one shot. The smile on Logan's face was all "A Hunt Above" needed to know that this was a lifelong dream of Logan's and we can only pray that his life will continue without any more hardships. "
