Anybody do it? Me and the wife are going this weekend. It will be the first time that we've actually hiked a pretty good distance to where we camp. Any pointers on what to take and what would be better left home? It will just be a short trip around here but I dont want to break myself down getting to the campsite.

I hope you have a good pack. If you don't you will know it soon enough. You wan to keep the weight high in the pack or on top. Low weight will get you messed up real quick. As far as what to bring, well you got to hump it in, so I would recomend if you co do without, do so.
I don't hike to much anymore but I do from time to time. I have the Large Army rucksack. They were good to me but it might be because I have got used to them before so to speak.

Take a quality water filter, then you don't have to pack it in and you know you'll be drinking safe water.
I haven't packed in in years, used to put on many a mile in the Rockies when I was a sprout.

What RedOak said about a good pack. I also use the large ALICE pack. Don't skimp on a cheap or small first aid kit. You may be glad you took my advice on this one. Take road flares......get em at AutoZone or Walmart. They will get a hot fire started FAST. Even with soaking wet wood. Keep em in a freezer zip lock. A good machete, a good size hunting kife and a small knife.....I like to whitle alot. ;D Pack in plenty of water.....it's heavy but you'll need it. A filter is ok...I have one but would only use it in a survival situation. The sticks is NO place to get runs you can't get rid of. Been there, done that. Take a couple of good two way radios in case you get separated. If you are gonna move far, plenty of foot powder and many changes of socks. I also fill my flask with a good single malt. ;D I think that's all........yep, that's it.

Oh, damn....most importantly:
A GOOD map of the area and a GOOD compass. Even if you use GPS, it could go down, get lost or whatever.
