Bottom Line, no deer down today. But today was the day of babies in the woods.
It was about 73 degrees, sunny and a NW wind at 9 mph. We spooked three does going in to our trees (hunting on Ft. Benning). So we figured the day was going to be good. By 3 PM we were settled in our stands, swaying in the breeze. Literally.
I had three baby armadillos rustling in the leaves around me all afternoon. I was set up in a pine tree with two huge oak trees behind me and the Chattahoochee River behind them. By the time the fifth young squirrel (half the size of the adults) went zipping by me in the trees, I realized that even though the acorns weren't dropping yet, they were in the trees grabbing them.
About 5 PM, I saw a deer coming in to me. It stopped just behind some brush and pine trees. For a minute, I thought I had imagined it, then I saw the shadow move. I had my bow up ready to draw, when it stepped out from behind the tree, it was a spotted fawn with no doe in sight. It passed by me at about 15 feet and headed for my husband's tree, where it spent the next hour or so, wandering around looking lost.
Richard spotted a doe as it got up from its bed at the edge of the river and so did the fawn. It took off for the doe, and spooked the doe in the process. The fawn stuck tight to the doe, and they both came back by me, but I had no shot. Just as well. We don't shoot does with fawns anyway.
That was it for babies in the woods, 3 armadillos, five squirrels and the fawn.
But it was a great day anyway! Even though we didn't get one.
