Went huntn today and got a shot at a NICE buck. I had come out of my climbing stand, around 10am. I was taking a leak and looked and about 50 or 60 yards away this buck was walking by. I got to my stand and put my face mask on and got my bow out of it's Primos sling. I grunted and he kinda stalled out. He turned and came at me. I'm standing on the ground hiding behind my treestand that is still on the tree. He gets about 30 or 40 yards away and I draw and shoot. I hit a tree and the deer troots off. I grunt and he stops and comes around me. He comes within 30 or 40 yards again, I draw and shoot, he jumps the string. Long story short, I gut shot him. He WALKS off limping. I and 3 others looked for 4 hours after giveing him 3 hours to expire. That would have been my first bow kill. I hate not finding a deer and knowing they did not make it.

Now don't take this the wrong way, I'm just trying to help...
..but there is a HUGE difference between 30 and 40 yards. If you don't have it narrowed down to the closest yard you're never going to hit consistant, especially at "30 or 40 yds"
Otherwise, I agree with you, it's always hard to hit a deer and not find them. Keep em in the 20 yd range and you will probably find the next one.

It is a hard pill to swallow, hopefully you'll nail the next one.

He was closer to 35 yards. That is a shot I practice regularly. I would not take a shot I was uncomfortable with. The problem is he was looking at me and jumped when I shot. My horizontal was on the money, I have a thirty five yard pin. I hit to far back because he jumped. Gun season starts Saturday, this will not happen again.
"Now don't take this the wrong way, I'm just trying to help..." It's all good, I understand.
