Howdy all..
Well, Deers and Beers '05 is in the books and it was alot of fun if nothing else. We kinda had an off year, dang acorns were everywhere so that made the deer very hard to pattern. We didn't figure them out until the last two days but we hit em hard once we did.
Day 1: Daniel killed a big doe. He does not normally shoot deer, he is there to bowhunt for turkeys. He has to pay an out of state license now so he wanted to get the most out of his $225.
Here's a tip.....groundblinds make deer nervous, at least it did for me. I have a stand that I have killed a deer out of the first hunt every year for the past 8 years or so. So what do I do? Put up a doghouse to make it easier. WRONG MOVE! A doe busted me at 7:30 am and another busted me at 8 am. Saw a small spike that afternoon, not a legal buck in AR.
Day 2: Didn't see a deer
Day 3: Didn't see a deer....Dave killed a small 7 pt
Day 4: Last morning, getting off the stand at 10 am to pack up. Came down to the wire. At 9:15 I looked at my watch and conceeded that I was gonna get skunked for the first time in a looooooong time at bowcamp. Just as the thought went thru my mind, I heard leaves cracking. A small 5 pt was moving my way, first deer I seen in over 2 days. He fed up directly under my stand. I was gonna let him pass under my stand then shoot him as he was quartering away. As I was drawing back, he looked straight up at me and jumped sideways. He started walking directly away from me and once he was going to make it around a brush pile he was going to be gone. I made a split-second decision to shoot him straight down between the shoulder blades (not a shot I recommend). I released and the arrow found it's mark. The buck kicked and bolted up the hill. He ran about 80 yds then stopped for a long time, I thought he had layed down. I got down and found my arrow covered in blood and an extremely good bloodtrail. Not 100% sure of my shot placement, I packed out my stand and went to drink coffee at camp for awhile. As I was loading up my 4-wheeler, my buddy (who was hunting about 200 yds up the hill in the direction the buck ran) radioed and said he had one down. I went to his stand and sure enough, there lay my 5 pt.....he had spine shot it ruining about 1/2 the backstrap. After further inspection it was deterimined that I had hit left of the backbone about halfway back and exited between the front legs. The bloodtrail was just as good at my buddy's stand as it was when the buck left my stand....
I let my buddy have the deer. He is still trying to get his #'s up... ;D
When we got back to camp, Paul had another 5pt he killed that morning also.
All in all, 4 deer in 4 days but it was tough.
Jeff fell out of his stand on the second day and is lucky to be alive. He had already taken his safety belt off and was about to climb out when the climber section slid sideways and hurled him out. Paul was standing right there. He is very lucky. Nothing but a sore back and a busted elbow.
