Got invited to hunt a property last night by the owner of the archery shop in town. This particular place is a quarter section. The fringes still have the round bales of hay on them and the barly is still laying in windrows on the ground. There are pockets of aspens and willow scattered throughout the place. As soon as we got out of the jeep a big mature doe came out about 60 yards and watched us.She flipped us her tail and trotted off to the next bunch of trees. Then I tried to ambush a doe feeding down a fenceline but the damn coyotes started yipping and howling and that set her on edge and she wouldn't come any further down the line.Saw one more doe as she fed out of a group of aspens but never had a chance at her.We still hunted the fringes of the aspens till sunset and then headed back to the jeep.Just as I got back I looked at my back trail and here comes the biggest spiker buck I have ever seen, his spikes were in excess of 18 inches, looked like they belonged on an elk,not a deer . Of course hind sight is 20/20 and if I had stayed on that fringe line 10 minutes longer he would have walked right by me.We're going again tonight, there's supposed to be 9 or 10 bucks on this place and one is in the 160 class,I'd like to see him.
