Almost didn't happen.Woke up about 3:30 a.m. with rain fallin pretty hard.I had to get up to take a leak and I couldn't see the river valley for all the low cloud.Oh well,we're here for a week.Larry gets up awhile later to tend to his needs and says lets go,the clouds are lifting. We put the coffee on and start getting dressed.Get on the trail to the stands just as the light is coming on.
I got pretty wet walking into my stand, the grass is up to my knees where I walk in and then of course all the low bush just waiting for you to brush it and dump its deluge on you.Sure makes for quiet walking.
I was in my stand for about fifteen minutes when a deer comes up the trail going in the opposite direction from the one I saw the day before.Again it's a white tail doe but this one still has her red summer coat on,they're pretty in this color phase. She's just picking her way along pausing now and then to pick at something.I didn't even have a chance to draw on her as she fed off the trail into the new pine growth. That's the last I saw of her or any other deer that day.I did see a pine martin humping down the trail, you should have heard the squirrels alarm barking at him.
My pard had a bit better morning than me for seeing game.He had two different white tail doe's come in.The first one was real flighty and on edge and he just let her walk. The second one came in head down and browsing and he was able to draw on her but she gave him no shot.
The rain came back at about 9:00 and chased us out of our stands, good excuse for a hot coffee and breakfast.
We lost the rest of the day to inclement weather and called it a camp day, good excuse to get into the whiskey.
Day three was a total washout, rain and gusting winds, another camp day, better watch the beer supply if this keeps up..........
