So I watched this 7 pt and a doe feed about 50 yards in front of me on the acorns for about 20 minutes. I glassed the whole hillside as I watched them. Nothing else around. So, when this guy came in and finally turned right at about 8 yards I said, "You're it. I haven't shot anything lately"!! WHACK Twack! So he takes off and I'm bobbing up and down trying to keep an eye on him. I saw him slow to a walk but didn't see him flop. I couldn't pick him out so I'm bobbing and weaving. I look back toward the doe who had fed by me and she's starting to do the stiff legged shuffle. About that time, 20 yards the other side of her all I can see is massive 8 pt horns making like a radar dish...trying to figure out why that little bugger took off like he'd been shot. So he stands out in front of me for 20 minutes and never moves. Finally a couple more does show up and they all wander down the hill. 10 minutes later here comes a rag horn and two 8 points bigger than the one I shot. They're all hyper and nervous and stand off to my side about 50 yards away for ever. They finally pass on by and disappear. As I start to descend I look toward where my deer run. I can see his white belly 80 yards away. I've never seen so much blood at the point of impact. I always track them out even if I see them. I can see where he ran and follow it right to the deer. I never found any blood after he ran. He had so much fat... I think a big glob just plugged it up. It entered 3 or 4 inches from the spine and exited at the last rib on the other side right at the junction of white belly hair and brown hair. Awfully skimpy blood trail... well really NONE. He was dead in seconds, but all the blood was in his chest cavity. Go figure.
