Why it is you can't use monofil as a leader?
I mean, leaders are cheap enough. I usually buy em by th dozen.
I know the big difference is the radical taper, but other than that, why not?

The only real reason why is the taper. You need to have that taper to turn the flies over, which is especially important when using big flies. I use different sizes of mono to make my own tapered leaders. It's easy to do, and cheaper too!
