I love fishing salt water with a fly, but, I just don't have the daggone money to take off to Islamorada (even though I'd sleep in the truck if I thought it would make it there!) Fly Fishing qualifiers announced
ESPN Fly Fishing Challenge applications:
Western event | Eastern event
We are pleased to announce that ESPN will be holding two competitions to qualify a total of eight anglers for berths in the 2004 ESPN Great Outdoor Games Fly Fishing Competition. Each of the two qualifying competitions will be limited to 12 anglers. All anglers must submit the linked application(s) to be considered for the event(s).
Six participants for each event will be selected by committee review. The remaining six competitors for each event will be determined by the results of an open call casting competition in which any angler who has applied for the event is eligible to compete.
The open call casting competition will be held early on the first day of each tournament. Any angler who has ever professionally guided on the tournament waters will not be eligible for selection by the committee, but may qualify for participation via the open call casting competition.

Eastern Event Fishing Format: This event will be a saltwater fly fishing tournament. The competitors will participate in a casting competition to seed them for flight and guide selection. Each competitor will be provided with a boat and guide. The guide will act as the competition official and may assist competitors with landing fish (handling the leader or netting the fish) only when asked to do so; guides may not handle the competitor's rod at any time. Guides may not suggest flies. A camera operator will also accompany each competitor in his or her boat. Competitors will have a four-hour window in which they may catch and release as many of the following fish as they are able:
Speckled Trout
Redfish
Bonefish
Tarpon
Permit
A fish is considered caught once it has been "reduced to possession" (i.e. touched), except for Tarpon, which must be measured as their will be a graduated point scale for Tarpon. Each fish species will have a point value assigned to it; the point value of each competitor's total catch will be totaled at the end of his or her fishing window. The six competitors with the highest scores from the first day of competition will move on to the final day of competition. The top four competitors from the final day of competition will earn invitations to the 2004 Great Outdoor Games. All fish caught will be released.

An official and a camera operator will accompany each angler. The top six competitors from the first day of competition will move on to the final day of competition. The top four competitors from the final day of competition will earn invitations to the 2004 Great Outdoor Games. All fish caught will be released.
