Who has one, what do you have, what do you like/dislike about it?
I am in the market to buy a GPS, but to be honest, I dont know squat about them. I know what they look like, but thats about it. How do you know what one is "the" one your looking for? I dont need anything super fancy, and dont want to spend $500 on one.
I have wore out the pages in Cabela's trying to read what they all do, and its a bit confusing to me.
I can understand wanting waterproof, but what about all that elevation crap, PC compatable business, and all the other stuff? Help me out if you can, Im lost, and in need of a GPS.

BTs, I used them in the military and they are great. I fought in Desert Storm and where there is little or no land features they are a life saver, better than a compass. Now I still carry a compass in case the battery dies. The ones with altimeters are not necessary, but if you intend to use it for hunting, scouting, hiking, etc., I would get one with the pc compatibility, to hook to pc, download and print maps and results from scouting.
Just as info for all who would like to use one, you can proram them to operate on either L/L: longitude/latitude with degrees, minute and seconds, or, UTM: Universal Transverse Mercatur, which is a fancy way to say the entire world divided up into grids from 2 main lines on earth,1 north-south and 1 east-west. The military ground forces mainly use UTM, which they call military grid reference system, which once learned is way easier than L/L.

Thanks, this is the kind of info I need. Keep that info coming.

Sorry I can't help bro. I an old school redneck that finds his way through the woods and swamps by the sun and moon and by identifying trees and branches(branches are small creeks or brooks for Northern bretheren) as landmarks.

Hey BuckT, I've been looking at the Garmin Geko 201 or the 301. What ever you get, make sure it has WAAS capability. That technology was just released by the military to be used in the private sector GPS units. The 201 and the 301 have these features:Accuracy: 10 feet or less with WAAS Easy operation: five buttons for one-hand use Weight: only 3.1oz with batteries Compact size: 3.9" x 1.9" x .96" High-contrast display: 64 x 100 pixels Battery life: 12 hours on 2 AAA batteries Waypoint/Route storage: 500/20 x 125 Automatic track storage: 10,000 trackpoints and 10 saved tracks External ports: PC connectivity and external power Waterproof: submersible for 30 minutes in one meter of water (IEC 529 IPX7 standards) Entertainment: four interactive, outdoor games Heh....even has games on it. Check em out at: www.garmin.com/products/geko201/Anyway, bro, those are the 2 GPS units I have been looking at for some time now. I am waiting for Walmart to get them in even as we speak. Should be after the 1st of the year.

I'll tell ya'.... if we had had those things in Vietnam I think a lot of friendly fire incidents would have been avoided. Seems like some grunt was always calling in an artillery round on his own position. I just don't really have a need or use for one. My buddy loves his but he uses it to pinpoint fishing hotspots etc.... especially ice fishing or fishing in Lake Ontario. Can't tell you a thing about them.
