Howdy how many of you are still using oldtime rifles and ball? I prefer real black powder and round ball for hunting and shooting.60grs.fffg and .395 roundball kills deer dead. Mines a handmade caplock 40" 7/8,"s Green Mountain barrel lg. Siler lock hand pounded and forged iron hardware with maple stock. Hand made by me with hand tools.

I haven't killed a hog with a M/L yet, actually, I haven't killed a wild hog period, yet. I have done alot of research, watched a lot of hunts on Outdoor Channel on tv. and I know there's thousands of hunters out & about that have. I'm not saying that a hog can't be killed with a .40 caliber round-ball, but I think 60 grains of powder is a little dimunitive. A well-placed shot with a .22 mag behind the butt of the ear will kill a hog, but you can't always count on an ideal shot like that. Hogs have a thick area of hide behind their front shoulders, and if a heart/lung shot is needed, you're going to want a fairly heavy, solid slug to get through it & into the vital area, and I wouldn't attempt it with any muzzleloader less than .45 caliber. Myself, I have a double .54 cal. rifle, and I'm pushing a 405 grain Powerbelt hp. copper-clad with 120 grains of FF Triple-7 powder, out of 28" barrels, with a 1-in-24" twist. Where I hunt, there's a couple of tuskers over 300#, that I've got my sights set on. Granted, my set-up may be a bit excessive, but I hunt with my butt on the ground, and if I put one into a tusker with an ugly disposition, I don't want that bugger setting his sights on me! Please ask more questions, and do a little more research before headin' out with your fine .40 caliber rifle. Be safe, Good-Shootin', and God-Bless.

This pattern of rifle is allso called a hogrifle in Tenn. folklore. I have not used it on hogs yet,but I have a 50 cal hog rifle that as killed hogs with roundball broadside at 25yds with 80grs of ffg. The 240lb sow ran 50yds and fell over dead. The ball was not found. It was cast a tad hard with 50-50 bar and not pure lead for penatration.

The only Hog I've killed with a Muzzleloader was with a .50Cal. Inline with 385gr. Great Plains Bullet, pushed by 90gr. of Pyrodex,at 40 yards. The bullet went through, but stopped in the Hide on the far side. oneshot
