A buddy of mine has the Hawken's rifle in .50 cal. He uses the 350gr Maxi-ball with 110gr of Pyrodex, and it will shoot a 3" group at 100 yards.
Dont try the sabots, they go all over the place in that gun. That 1:48 twist doesnt like to throw them very well.

It all depends on how the gun throws them Commanche. If the gun shoots the 275gr bullets good, it will kill the deer just as fast as the 350gn bullet. Its all in the bullet placement when you hit the deer. Heck, you could hit the deer with a BB in the right spot and kill it. I would try them both, and then decide which one shoots the best. In my buddies case, the 350gr bullets worked the best, but in your gun, it may be different. Good luck.

here is update of testing we did on hawkins .50cal flintlock.the best bullet we used was the 370gr.maxi-ball. stay away from those maxi-hunters,terrible.we used 80 grs.of 2f.i shot in the same hole with open sights at 25 yds.i here the pwerbelts work good in 295 gr.but to expensive for me. i can get 20 non lubed maxi-balls for 6 dollars.
