I shoot/hunt with a Traditions "Pennslyvania" model .50 cal. side-hammer. I bought it new in '95, in time for Michigan's rifle season, in which I took a real nice doe. It has a 1 in 28" twist, and at first, I was skeptical of how it would throw a patched round-ball. surprisingly, it's quite accurate out to about 60 yards or so. I then put the T/C maxi-hunters through it & performed very well to 80 yards or so. I've never tried to push it beyond that, as it has a 24" barrel. I used 110 grs. of Goex FFFg black powder. Only this year I've switched to the same charge of Pyrodex "P". I have to use a faster burning powder for the shorter barrel. I wasn't able to hunt from '97 until this past season, when I lost a doe that I shot with it. It made me sick! Anyhow, as a result, I now use both the Powerbelt 295gr. copper-clad hollow-points, I picked up some new "Saber Tooth" belted muzzleloader bullets in 270 gr. They look just like the powerbelts, except the hollow-point is petaled. I haven't used either for hunting yet, but they shoot excellent through my smokepole. This spring, I purchased my almost lifelong desire: a Kodiak side-by-side .54 Express Rifle. I've only put a couple of rounds through it, but I'm going to the range this weekend and put it through the paces & find out what kinds of loads it likes to digest. The only draw-back that I didn't foresee, was the fact it weighs-in at a whopping 10.4 lbs! Here just recently, I also picked up a used & abused Pedersoli made .54 cal. swivel-breech double rifle. It was pretty rough, but I've tightened & touched it up, and it turned out pretty nice. I'm going to "dial it in", too this weekend. I'll post more later, (if I haven't put everyone to sleep).
