Hello everyone; I went to the range this morning to fine-tune my .50 cal, and my Remington 870. 12 guage. I had put a rifled-slug barrel on the 'ol scattergun earlier this year, and had purchased some Winchester Partition Gold sabot-slugs to crank through her. The ones I got were 3" with a 385 grain slug (7/8oz.). I sighted it in @ 30 yards, as the terrain that I hunt only offers good, clear shots between 25 & 50 yards, respectively. Now, for the "good" part; The slugs were very consistant, BUT, if any of you hunters use these, hold on to that gun good & tight, because out of mine, they felt like a .460 Wheatherby Mag!!! I burned-up 8 rounds getting my sights dialed-in, and my shoulder is bruised. I even have a factory rubber butt-pad on the 'ol gal, & it still hurt. I must say, though, I pity whatever is on the receiving end of that slug! Right on the box it states 2000 FPS- high velocity. Man, they weren't kidding!

Kodiac,
I just put a pad made by LimbSaver on my 16 ga. I know the 16 is NOTHING like what you are firing but it makes my 16 feel like a .22. No kidding. I put mine on because the old pad looked like hell. It was the original made in '62. I am definantly sold on LimbSaver products.
They are expensive ($30 is what I paid) but well worth it.
Good luck.

I'm a little behind the times, here, but I bought a LimbSaver butt-pad for my 'Ol Mule, but haven't tried it out yet. I was able to find one specifically for an 870. Some have to be sanded down to shape the contours. Here recently, I've been cruising the favored mail-order supply houses for the price & availability of more of those Winchester sabot-slugs, and discovered that they've gone up in price from $14.99/bx of 5, to $17.99/bx of 5!!! Midway & Bass-Pro still sells them for that price, but they're on back-order. I guess that's why I prefer to stock-up in the off-season when price & availability is better. My youngest son is moving down here tomorrow, and we plan on hunting together this Thanksgiving. This will be our first deer season hunting together, and I'm REALLY looking forward to it. Hopefully he can become a member here, and we can team-up next year?
