Hi All,
I took the newly aquired P-H 3--06 rifle out this afternoon stalking, however I got a young Fallow buck but I did not have to stalk it.
The shot was a head shot from 2".................... yes 2 inches as on my way over to the wood there was a hold up and a car on the side of the road with a smashed front. Two more cars had stopped to help and were directing the traffic, as I passed I saw the Fallow Buck down with an elderly gentleman trying to calm it. I slowed down as I came level with the second traffic helper and asked if they wanted the Deer dealt with, some jerk started blowing his horn at this
So I pulled over and put the hazards on and walked back so see how the deer was. It's right back leg was broken in two and it had blood on it's head and was frightened to death, obviously it would most likely die slowly of shock The Police had been called and as I spoke to the elderly gentleman they arrived. They said soem one was on the way to shoot it, so I offered to do it now! they caled the other person and cancelled them and I went to get the rifle from the car.
The elderly Gentleman asked if we would wait until he had taken his wife away, both I an the Police respected his wishes and the Police lady with the officer took over steadying the Buck, the Officer then helped her as the Buck was trying to rise. I walked around behind the Buck, it was a young Knobber with only about 2" of antler in velvet showing above the skull. Probably about 1-1 1/2" years old The officer moved out of the way I chambered a round and put my left hand on his shoulders to steady him the WPC them moved behind me, I warned them to mind their ears and put the muzzle about 2" behind his head and squeezed the trigger. instant if messy as it blew the whole head apart.
I offered to remove the carcase, not knowing it it would be any good and the Police gladly accepted, they even gave me some plastic bags to cover the head so the mess would not get into the car and even thanked me for helping . I had my Licenc with me and put it in my pocket when I got the rifle out but the Officer never asked to see it and he did ask later if I was on thier list to call out in events like this. I told him I lived in another county which I do but to meet polite Police is a rarity, but I honestly believe that the tow officers were some what distressed to see the Der suffering and genuinely glad to see it dealt with quickly and cleanly.
I Cut his neck near the shoulder to allow it to bleed whilst I went to bring the car closer. So I now have a carcase to skin and joint, I carried onto the wood and gralloched him there and pout the innards in one of the plastic bags which I will dispose of later. None of the gut was damaged so apart form the haunch which may be messed up from the impact the rest of the carcase looks to be fine ;D
Not the best way to obtain venision but it's legal and it did help out so I am not complaining
