I want to take a whitetail with my .30-30 this year and I gotta ask a couple of questions.
1) At what distance (max) would you feel ok taking a deer with this cartridge?
2) What kind of knock down does this round have at 100-130 yards?
Before you answer, here is the vital information:
I will be in a 15 foot tri-pod with a 90 degree fan as a field of view. Opportunities could easily be out to 100 yards +. Southwest Central Texas so there will be alot of brush. 150 grain Winchester Power Point Plus. There is a feeder directly in front of the stand at about 40 yards with a clear shot. I have an un-obstucted field of fire of about 45 degrees infront of me and out to about 60 yards. Winchester model 94. Iron sights only. Hunting the same tri-pod morning and evening.
Now, I want a safe kill and I WON'T take a shot unless I know it's a good T-bone shot. I DO NOT want to track a wounded animal. I could take my 7mm Rem Mag but I really want to harvest a whitetail with the .30-30.
Please let me know what you think (all things considered) and your personal experiences with this cartridge while hunting.

I personaly would pefure 170 silver tips or 170 rem cor-lots. the 150 dont add enought extra volicty to make up for the punch of the 170.
open site i would limet my self to 100-125yds.
with extreamly good light 150 may be do abile.
with a scope 200 is not out of the question. "put that there for comparision.
my chart for bolistics for that load is. mv-2390 E-1902// 100yds V-2018 E-1356// 200yd V1684 E-944// 300yds V1398 E-651// with a zero of +3.8 in high at 100yd is on at 200 and 16.6in low at 300yards
I have taken deer and hogs with the old 30/30 and have sean black bear taken first hand with it.
I have never used the 150 i have all ways stuck with the 170. i have all ways had good luck with it being used as a brush rifle.
most of my shots with it have been on moving game. in very tight places range musserd in feet not yards.
i have had only 1 core seperation i shot the deer at about 10 feet the bullet went through both sholders but came to rest under the far side skin with out the bullet jacket. hope this helps

I've tried the 170 gr and I just don't get the acuracy I like out of the gun so I stick with the 150's.
I feel ok out to 120 yards with the iron sights as long as there is plenty of light.
Thanks BT...you know I value your opinon.

thats a good reasion to use the 150's i did not eaven think of the aceracy ? most of the peopel around here think they can get futher shots using them and i was "thinking localy" on that one.
120 is a very acceptal range.
btw the power points are probly better than the silver tips using the 150 they dont expand quit as quickly st or cl
good luck buddy

I have a bad feeling that I'll be making a stupid mistake taking an unscoped rifle out with me.

H4, that 30-30 has killed more deer than the plague. You wont be making a mistake with an un-scoped rifle. You just have to be comfortable shooting it. I would be extremely confident using a 30-30 out to 150 with iron sights. Take it out and get yourself a deer.

h4 if you mean bolistics the chart that in my first post was for the 150pp. or do you mean the harder to open? if so from what i have been told the pp has a little heaver jacket and not as much lead exposed as the st.
i have done my on test with the 170 pp and st out of the 30.30 and got a biger mushroom from the st but more pentration with the pp.
i have also done it with the 06 and found the same results. i use 180gr pp in my 06's

I always used 150s in mine. Do like I did last year when I hunted with the AR15 take em both, when light fades you still have the scoped gun..... As for the 30-30, bust it if you can hit it. I hunted with a dude when I was in HS that shot a doe at close to 300yds with his, Ill never know how he made that shot. If I hadnt been there there is no way I would have believed him.

I had these same questions not to long ago..my wife loves the 30-30 and I wanted to know the best round...I think SH suggested get the biggest core-lok you can get..try to hit them in the neck..said they would drop in their tracks

The furthest i have ever shot a deer with my 30-30 (150 grain power points) was around 100 yards. It was a double lung hit and that deer ran about 75 yards before it piled up. I personally wouldnt shoot at a deer with open sights at that distance. (Due to my accuracy at that distance. Deer can cover alot of ground with a marginal lethal shot from any gun and the 30-30 is not the gun to accidentlly be making marginal shots with. Let practice be the judge. If you can keep the bullets in a pie plate consistantly at 100 yards shooting offhand with open sights then go for it. If not, then cut down your range.
