ben
That's what I'm affraid of.
I KNOW i can do 3 inch groups at 100 yards with open sights.....I'm more worried about recovering the animal.
Sunday, my buddy shot a big 8 point with a .243 at dark and tracked him until 1 in the morning. Never found him.

I wouldnt worry about that. The 3030 will kinda in a way hit harder. The bullet is a lot slower than a 243, but has 1/3 more weight.

I hunt with iron sights as well and I am going to have to say my max distance is 125 yards.

In all my years of deer/black bear hunting, I've only taken a 30/30 out twice. Once I busted a big doe @ about 80 yards with a Marlin lever & open sights. I hit her with a 150 grain Rem. core-lokt about center of the neck. The hole going in was about the size in diameter of a quarter, and coming out was at least twice that size. She dropped like a wet dish-rag. The second time out, I popped a fat spike @ about 50 feet, with a 150 grain Win. (some "Commerative" ammo, with nickel cases) Silver-tip, I believe (it's been quite a few years ago!). He only went about 20 feet with a broadside heart/lung shot. BTW, both times, was with open sights. Something to consider is the new Hornady "Lever-revolution" rounds that are basically a soft-plastic pointed bullet that function, and were designed, to shoot through a lever-gun. The pointed bullet being ballisticly superior to flat-point, or round-nose ammo. They may be a bit pricey, but may very well be worth it. You may want to research them a bit. Good-Luck & Good Shootin'.

Bro, I saw the Lever-Revolution ammo. I have not tried it yet. However, since I first posted this thread a couple of years ago, I have taken the 94 out several times and hammered 2 large hogs with it. The first hog I was a little unsure of shooting with that round and the 150 gr PP+ but that shot quikly changed my mind. I nailed that hog through heavy brush and I don't even know what that bullet hit on the way but it popped that hog (247 pounds) right where I aimed. She ran 15 yards and piled up. She was dead before she took off running. Also, with the 150 gr PP+ I can shoot 3 inch groups at 150 yards with iron sights (some times I amuse myself ). I truely have a HUGE amount of confidence in that gun.
