I know this may sound a bit elementary and basic to many here, but what are the basic types of knots to use for fishing hooks? If possible can you provide pictures? I'm from Kentucky and I need pictures. I'm always afraid to use my Rapala's and more expensive fishing lures because I may lose them because I didn't tie an appropriate knot. I'm also just generally afraid I didn't tie my knot tight enough and my fear would be to get a nice sized fish on the line and watch it swim away because my knot was weak. Any help would be much, much appreciated. Thanks and God Bless, Chris

Chris, I don't know if this will come up as a link or not, but here's an address that you could type in, and check out. I keep it in my favorites browser. www.netknots.com/html/fishing_knots.html . It does show several types of knots, and the Rapala knot is one of them. Good-luck & hope this helps..........Wayne.

Wow, thanks a lot Wayne. That link did show up as a weblink in your post. Now this is how a message board should work. I will print out and learn each of these knots so I won't feel inadequate when it comes to fishing. I will also save money in fishing lures. I noticed the first one is the fisherman's knot, can that one pretty much be used for any type of hook and/or fishing? Thanks Wayne. DS11, I know what you mean buddy, I've been using some kind of knot I can hardly describe. ;D

Chris -- With Monofilament the Uni-Knot will just about do it all. I like the Palomar for braid such as Sufix and PowerPro. If you are using FireLine the Uni-Knot will work fine. I do take a few more turns(seven or eight) on the standing line. A link to the Uni-Knot system. www.in-fisherman.com/magazine/guides/cg2003Sp_Uniknot/index.html

Chris, the clinch knot was the first fishing knot that I learned to use, then I was showed the "improved" version of it, and used it for many years. I now use the Trilene Knot, which is just about the same, except that there are two wraps made through the eye instead of one. Remember, though, if you use this knot, wet it just before drawing it tight. It has less tendecy to kink up when drawn down. I don't use too many different knots, I just stick with the few that work the best for me. I'm glad that the link was/is helpful. Good Luck & God-Bless.....Wayne.

Basically what I did was print out each knot and put it in my fishing book I have in my tackle box. I'm heading out early tomorrow morning for another fishing trip and I plan on trying a few of these knots.
Thanks guys for all your help. I can surely use it. LOL
God Bless Ya!

I've used the improved clinch for years, still do as a matter of fact. But now I'm starting to have trouble when trying to tie on a size 16/18 fly to a 2 pound tippet. The ole eyes just aren't what they used to be,even with my progressive lenses I'm now using a fly connector on the end of the tippet, sure helps when I have to do multiple fly changes, and it will not sink any of my smallest dry fly patterns. When I tie up a new leader I use the surgeons knot for each section of leader or adding on tippet.I use the nail knot for attaching flyline to the backing on the real. The surgeons knot will probably hold up to the most strain of all the knots.

Palomar knot baby! I tie everything but spinnerbaits with a palomar knot (which I learned to tie a few years ago when dropshot rigs became popular), I use the cinch knot for my spinnerbaits because they seem to list a little with the palomar.

Today I tried the Uni Knot and the Rapala knot. They each worked beautifully in their own right.
Again, I don't know how to thank you enough for your experience and insight on helping get back into fishing.
God bless You each and everyone!
