Went ice fishing yesterday up on Burnt Stick Lk.Caught this guy on a size 16 bait hook,we were fishing for perch and didn't expect to catch a northern pike.I've caught lots of pike but this is my first on thru the ice .

Hunt, he gave a good fight for a few minutes,I only use 4# test line so I had to be careful, plus their teeth are razor sharp and can cut the line in a heartbeat.
DS,yea there were cracks running all over the lake. You should have heard the ice.You could hear cracks running the length of the lake, had a few go right thru where we were fishing, kinda unnerving until you get used to it.As the day warms up the noisier the ice gets,as soon as it cools off it goes completely silent.

I think that would freak me out too much. How thick is it?

About 12 inches of hard ice and a couple inches of soft ice on top.

There were people out there with trucks and travel trailers.
4 inches is safe to walk on,6 inches is safe to drive on,I won't drive on it till it's at least a foot thick. Those are for good hard ice conditions with no snow.If we stay cold at night ,next week there'll be another 6 inches of ice.I've seen it where the ice goes over three feet thick.

I'd be ok with 3 feet.
Does it still pop and crack that thick?

Sure does.It expands and contracts with the weather. When you drive on it it actually creates a wave in front of your vehicle, you can't see it or feel it,but when you stop you can hear it run out in front.Every time a rig drives down by us you can see the water move up and down in the holes we're fishing. It still gives me a 10 on the pucker factor when the ice cracks where you're standing, you can definately feel and hear that . On saturday a did a jump three feet side ways while sitting when a crack went right under my fishing bucket I was sitting on.My fishing pard just laughs at me,it don't bother him none.

Nice pike Blue it's good to see someone has good ice. We had some good ice around Christmas, but it's long gone. Every river, lake and pond is wide open. If the weather dosen't change i'll dewinterize one of the boats. Tied up a few quick strike rigs(100# Cabela's salt striker) yesterday. The muskies better hope for a cold spell and ice. Good luck with the perch
