Shot this one on opening day Saturday. Pics are coming soon.
I scored on a
17.5 lber with a 10.5 in. beard and 1 inch spurs.
Kaiser aluminum and double glass calls worked great.
The birds have been very tight lipped this year. My plan was to roost a bird the night before and be on him in the morning. I heard some fly up that evening but I never heard a gobble. I tried the locator calls but still nothing. I eased in to within 60 yards of the birds Saturday morning and got set up. As the sunrose I could hear some clucking from the roost. I did a soft tree yelp but no response. I waited a few more minutes and 4 or 5 hens flew down and worked their way to me.
They came in to within 30 yards but there wasnt a gobbler in tow.
The hens turned around and headed away back up the creek.
I decided to sit tight and do some light calling for a few minutes before trying another area. About 30 minutes later i got ready to pack it up and try another spot.
I did a couple more soft yelps and some purrs and clucks before sticking my calls back in my pocket. As I was placing my strikers in my vest i heard something coming behind me. It was running through 3 or 4 inches of water so at first I thought it was a deer. I turned my head to the left just in time see the gobbler put on the brakes 15 yards from me. He eyeballed me for a few seconds and then attempted to slowly ease down towards the creek. Being left handed there was no way I could swing quickly enough to get a shot before he dissappeared into the palmettos .When he dissapperard in the palmettos I pulled out my call and did a couple of purrs and clucks. I quickly layed the call down and brought my gun back up.He turned and stepped out of the palmettos about 25 yards from me and eyeballed me again. He was behind some brush so I still couldnt shoot He then eased straight away along the edge of the palmettos and swung in front of me . As he went behind a pine I brought the gun up. He was 36 yards out when I shot. Im a happy man. Pics coming soon. www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid162/pc3cb600d53606fdcf56952dd95b4d5c1/f4aa0151.jpg[/img]
