This big gobbler was so stubborn, and I was so determined to get him that I stalked him.
My brother-in-law and myself hunted him for three days, he would always call back when called. We would set up and call, but he would never come.
Finally we saw him, but he was with five or six hens (ah-hah) THATS WHY.
So finally we dropped off the mountain into the bottom they were in, to stalk him. We got to within 50 yards of the flock when we spotted the first hen, WELL WE FROZE MID STEP IN THE OPEN WOODS. The rest of the flock was behind a fallen tree. WE JUST STOOD THERE WHILE THE HENS FED TOWARDS US ALONG THE EDGE OF THE MOUNTAIN.
The closest hen got to within fifteen feet of us before I finally spotted the GOBBLER COME FROM AROUND THE TREE. The lead hen would look in our direction, and when she would put her head down to feed I WOULD INCH MY SHOTGUN A LITTLE CLOSER TO MY SHOULDER.
FINALLY AFTER 45 MINUTES OF STANDING IN
AN AWKWARD POSITION, I WAS ABLE TO GET MY SHOT AT THIS MAGNIFICENT BIRD JUST AS HE FANNED AND STRUTTED.
Well from standing there so long my legs went numb, and as I ATTEMPTED TO RUN TOWARD MY PRIZE, MY LEGS WENT OUT AND I FELL FLAT ON MY FACE.
I just layed there while my Brother-in-law and myself Hi-Fived and laughed out loud.
IT WAS A HUNT I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER!!!
I HAVE A FULL BODY MOUNT OF MY TROPHY BIRD STRUTTING JUST AS I REMEMBER HIM!!!
HERE IS A PICTURE OF HIM (HE ALSO HAD A DOUBLE BEARD AND 1 1/4 IN SPURS)
