Hi All,
Sorry for the wait, but that :evildevil:evil work has been interferring and not allowing me enough time to write up more:rolleyes
Well we went up to look around the woods and ridges where we sighted my rifle in one afternoon hoping to find some Does at least up there, Steven went to try and find Stuart's old wooden stand and I went to the left down to the same ridge we used that Friday to sight in, after all I knew there were Deer down there;) Yep I had only just got into the entrance to the ridge and I see something fairly large streak across the bottom of a gulley to my right, of course my rifle in upon my shoulder, I grab for it then notice it's only a Big squirrel:rolleyes
Oh well I continue slowly down the ridge proper, when I get about 120 yards down the ridge, near where we put my target, two Deer explode along the gulley bottom, I had not noticed them standing there, but they had seen me skylighted most likey:( but the good part is thay heading in Steven's direction as far as I can tell, so I get on the radio and warn him, but where they went we don't know as he never saw them:rolleyes so after a few minutes to let things settle down, I move further down another 50 yards or so then I see through the trees a clearing on the other side of the next ridge so I carefully ease into the timber a few yards to sit at the base on an Oak to see what's moving about.
Well I had been sitting there about 15 minutes when on the ege of that clearing I see something grey with a bit of white at the rear streak across the gap Ii can see, next a few yards behind as I get the binos on the spot, goes a Big Turkey, after some more time Steven radio's me and asks me what I see, nothing much except Turkies and Squirrels I report, so I begin moving down to see what's further on down the ridge, I come to the bottom and the ridge flattens out into a Deer pasture with another wooded gully running from right to left across it, so I select a small bush to sit up with my back to it, and my heart leaps as from right under my foot a fool Rabbit suddenly burst, I had almost stepped on it:lol Ahhh I think that's probably what I saw before that Turkey;) so I settle down to watch and wait, and see nothing except a Kestrel hunting, after some while a figure comes stealthily out of the opening in the trees below and to my right, it's Steven and he has not seen me sitting up slope to him, so I slowly rise and wave to attract his attention then walk down to him and we discuss what to do next.
We decide to go along the gully towards the stand they put up for last year, and see what we can find, he goes into the gully and I go aong the pasture hoping one of us will drive a Deer to the other, I end up going to high and further along and end up in a large bedding area, where I find a fresh Bobcat track:D so I radio Steven as I can see his new stand or rather where is was from here, after we decide I have gone to far I backtrack ,he is sitting overlooking the small creek in the gulley by a promising looking crossing. I back track up into the pasture again and past Steven's postion till I find a trail down into the trees which I followed and into the the gully bottom away from Steven's position and find the wood stand they put up for me, I radio Steven and tell him I have found it and he asks me to check if it's still usable, it's very usable so I climb up in it to see what may come along, but again we draw a blank although there are plenty of fresh tracks about.
The wind was whistling down the hillside in front of me and nearly blowing me out of the stand:eek I end up laying down to avoid the stand which is rocking gemtly with the wind, it was then after some while of this we decide to go back to the same place we had met and see what is moving in the early evening as it's a bit sheltered there. I go and sit by my bush by the opening and Steven climbs in the oak with the Owl:lol up the top of the slope I sit for some while then I hear something moving along the gully bottom just out of sight for me, after a while I ease forward and Steven sees me move and asks me if I am not happy where I am, so I tell him about the movement, which he says is Squirrels, I answer it's to big for a squirrel so I stalk down to the wood edge and see nothing but I can here it moving this goes on for about 1/2 hour when I finally see it, damn Steven was right it'a blooming great big squirrel with hobnail boots on:lol I tell him and he does not laugh at me:eek So I lean up against a tree looking down the gully till dark them tramp up the hill, another balnk day, no deer for us.
Next morning we decide to try the other side of the road as Steven has mentioned, where I missed that big doe running, I do not like taking running shots, I tried to get a closer shot but my barrel hooked on a branch on the Oak I was sitting up against before Steven's shot rang out and he warned me that a Doe was heading my way, she appeared running up through the strip of timber on my right about 100 yards away, by the time I got a clear sight and the reticle on her she was more like 170 yards away and I shot over her back as she dropped down the back of the ridge, oh Pooh:(
I tell Steven what had happened and he is confused about where I am, I had gone way past where he intended me to be due to that new pond:( The day was spent as Steven has said and resulted in him taking that nice Doe, so after hanging her in a tree to start cooling, Steven makes tracks for the pick up because the 4 wheeler is down the other end of the farm of course where we were hunting begining of the week:rolleyes and leaves the truck there and brings the 4 wheeler up to cart the Doe on up to the road, where we hang it agin and go back to hunting with me sitting where he was but I saw no deer.
Steven's Doe
Next morning we return to hunt the same area and apart from a couple of Deer I spook whilst entering the start to a ridge later in the morning I see no Deer, Steven had more luck seeing a couple of Bucks, but no Does:rolleyes we had disturbed the area fairly well so as it's getting to the end of the week in fact it's now Saturday afternoon he decides to go down to the thicket which is on our left as we drive into the farm road.
