Hunted the inlaws Saturday and Sunday. Nothing from the blind on Saturday morning so I went looking for them and saw probably 10 does, only two of which gave me a good shot but they were really small. I did see one nice bodied deer that had his/her head behind a cedar branch and bolted before I ever saw whether it was a buck or a doe. Father-in-law's dang farmer showed up to plow the riverbottom so I gave up on hunting it. He stopped by on his way out and said that he's been running deer out all afternoon with the tractor. Go figure.
This morning I went on my little walkabout again and flushed 2 does. I was tired and mad that I didn't get a shot again when a 3rd doe walked out and stood behind a small cedar. I found her in the scope and figured she'd bolt too but she just stepped out from behind the tree. I pulled the gun up, found her again, pulled the trigger and absolutely destroyed a prickly pear about 5 ft behind her. She might still be running. I shot just below her belly. Found the hole through the cactus, no blood, no hair, and no deer.
I was really ready for some venison. I'll be back at it over Christmas.
