Ive been deer hunting for 24 years and this is a first for me. Heres the story. I climbed up into my stand well before daylight Tuesday morning. The wind was gusting pretty hard and normally I wouldnt have been stand hunting in conditions like this but a cold front was fast approaching and I figured the deer would be trying to feed as much as they could before it got here. At about 8:30 I had 4 does walk right under me and off into the clearcut. They fed out there for about an hour and wandered back into their bedding area. At around 9:30
turned my head to the left just in time to see a racked buck cross the logged trail about 60 yards away. No time to raise the rifle. I waited in my stand until about 10:15. By that time the wind had picked up so much that large limbs had started crashing down. I decided to climb down and stillhunt towards the area that the buck had gone..When the wind would start blowing hard I would walk slowly. When the wind slowed down I would stop and stand until it picked up again. I entered the pines on the trail the buck had gone, stopping and walking as I went. The wind letup so I stopped walking.
A few seconds later I see a deers head rise up out of the palmettos less than 20 yards away. The buck must have been lying down. As the buck watched me, I slowly raised my 25-06 to my shoulder. I fully expected the buck to bolt but it didnt. Instead it started walking straight towards me! I was pretty calm up until this point. Now the deer was 30 ft. away and getting bigger in the scope every second. I was hoping he would turn broadside but when he was about 20 ft away I figured he wasnt planning on it so I took the shot. The buck whirled around and quartered off to my right. I didnt hear any crashing so I figured he must have hit the other grass road. I found blood at the spot where he was standing and followed it down the grass road for another 40 yards where he was piled up.
Nice 7 pt. 120lbs. Im still wondering what that buck had on his mind. I was in full camo with an orange vest and face mask. Did he think I was another buck and was coming to fight, or maybe he thought I was a doe.
Was he coming to fight me or breed me. I guess we'll never know.
