Well, I got to see something I will probably never get to see again. Very well could have been a once in a life time sighting for many of us.
Yesterday Morning I took my 13 year old on a logging run to help a buddy fall some trees in a tight spot he found. He wanted my Jeep there to help. I was scouting at the same time and hunting some grouse. Have been for a few days now.
Anyway, we were on a switch back road and the switch back was only 15 feet above us. While cutting up one log we heard some thrashing around. Almost like horses running by right above our heads. We turned off the saw just in time to hear what sounded like about 5 guys banging baseball bats against trees! It was loud as thunder and the pounding and grunting was like an earthquake happening just above our heads. We were afraid whatever it was was going to come over the top above us and right down on top of us.
We had heard some Elk bugles earlier and thought it might be a couple elk going at it! So we quickly climbed up to the next road above us, staying behind bushes and trees and what we thought might be Elk was something even more spectacular......TWO BULL MOOSE going head to head not more than 15-25 yards away from us!
My daughter was so scared from the noise she never went up with me to see. She ran and jumped into the truck! Boy did she miss out! I watched the smaller bull push the bigger one back one way and the the big one push him back the other way for about....I don't know....it could have been 30 seconds or as long as 2 mins. But it was going on, loud, fast and mean! The muscle structure on those two moose was unbelievable!
Finally, the smaller bull comes running down the road at us and turns up the switch back with the big bull Antlers pushing its behind. They ran up and around the bend and that was all we saw. But it wasn't over yet!
We went back to cutting, after we quit shaking at amazement of what we just saw, and it was about 30 mins later, we start to hear it again! Same place and it sounded like horses running by us. This time the two bulls went around the switch back the other way and were fighting off the side of the road on a real steep spot! We ran down our road to look at them from the ground up. They fought on the side of the bank like it was nothing. No affect on them at all! The big bull got the best and the little one took off running and circled down around us and down into the canyon. We do not know where the big bull went.
Well, we finished up our logging and needless to say, the rest of the time we were logging, we were watching for Moose!
