Anybody use one of these and what kind?
I just bought a Gerber diamond sharpener and I already love it.

I have been using diamond nail files for years. They work just as good as the purpose made stones which I have floating around here and are soooooo much cheaper.

You got me there, DS.
I've had a small one for my pocket knife. Puts a heck on an edge on it and makes the touch-up sharpening a breeze.

I was meat cutter in an earlier life so I cut my teeth on a three sided stone. My wife bought me a mini version of the one we had in the meat market and that's all I've used now for 16 years. It takes some practice to get good with a stone but most folks can do it with time. Knife sharpening stuff is like golf gadgets and weightloss gimmicks there will always be some newer easier way to do it because it is so hard to master.

Shorthair I think what is the most critical aspect is knowing how to sharpen a knife and how to use whatever you are using to sharpen with. I use files alot myself. I am comfortable with them. I can use stones but just rarely do so. I sharpen knives on tools, bricks, and whatever else may be at hand.
I do agree about the gadjets though. We even use the little do dads with the washers to REMOVE the edges from stainless.
