2-way radios(midland) (cobra)??

has anybody ever had or have 2-way radios? I bought a pair of cobra 2 watt radios, that were supposed to have a range of 6 miles. I know it depends on the terrain and all, but in only flat country with just trees in the way, how far should they reach? all I could get was 1 stinkin mile! is that about normal? if so, those things are a joke!

Bo, if your getting 1 mile, you are doing pretty good. The ones that I have used, in the woods, will be 1/2 mile max, and sometimes only 1/4 mile.

Now, if you want range, there is a camp here that bought a repeater tower, and that gets them 13 mile range. ;D ;D

Seriously though, if you want a good radio, with 5+mile range, you are going to spend some pretty good money on them. I was talking with a radio tech at work, and for the 5+mile range, you are looking at a price of $300 +/- a few bucks per radio. Talking with the guys I hunt with is not that important to me I guess.

when I use a radio 1/4 mile is plenty of range for me, if I need more range than that I just pull out the cell phone.

Cobra's got a 4 watt that goes a little further. Midland does too.

I have Audiovox radios and get about a mile. I will never go out again without a set.I take em when me and my girls go camping so if I wonder off to fish or get wood or something, they can always get me if they need me.

Have you looked at the Motorola stuff? That's what I'll get when the Audiovox set dies.

I seriously doubt you'll ever get 5+ miles from a hand held radio. Sometimes in the woods here I have a hard time reaching 5 miles with my truck radio and its hooked up to 150watt linier, although getting skip from Puerto Rico is no problem.

I'll stick with my cellphone to before I pay $350 for a little 2-way. I've looked at the motorola, midland, cobra, all of the ones listed in the major huntin catalogs. I'd be happy if I could get 3 miles out of one, in the woods.

they dont work here in the mountains of pa. and they are illegal to use for hunting.

I'll stick with my cellphone too. I haven't found a place it wouldn't work yet and since I hunt mostly alone theres no need for 2 way's unless I wanna talk to my self.

A friend of mine has two of the best brands of marine VHF hand held radios (Standard). They work very well in the woods but are larger and heavier than the new very small GFRS radios. The VHF radios are also more expensive but I am guessing they are much better quality and may have more range.

I know lots of people that have and use the 2 way NEXTEL walkie feature. I don't have one. How much are the NEXTEL plans?? Are they comparable to the typical cell phone calling plans or are they more expensive?? I am guessing NEXTEL would be more expensive because of having the two way walkie feature. I do know the NEXTEL push to talk walkie feature is nice.

I have two Cingular cell phones on one 250 minute calling plan with free nights and weekends, free long distance, etc. and my monthly bill is about $62 or so if I don't go over the 250 min limit.

Check coverage before you go Nextel. My brother and guy he worked with had work-issued Nextel and said the reception was sometimes pretty bad even in the areas that were supposed to be well covered. They are cool for the limitless distance though as long as your in an agreeable area.
