Ok, here's the deal. I am planning a trip down south March 23-April 2. We are planning on going to Savanah GA, but want to stop and see cool stuff along the way. I know there is supposed to be some gem mines where you can do some panning somewhere around the Carolinas, not sure what the name is. I am sure that you guys that live down that way could probably point a yankee in the right direction to see and do some cool stuff. If you have any ideas, post them here. We are not going to be on any time schedule, just want to escape the cold and snow for a while. I have never been on vacation, other than to go hunting, so help me plan a fun filled trip.

There's a diamond mine in Murphresboro (sp?) AR that you can hunt diamonds in. That would be a long ways out of your way.
Are yall into country music? Nashville, TN would be a cool stop. Sorry, I'm not too familiar with that part of the south.

I went to Tybee Island (right across from Savanah) a few years ago. I'll go back and look at the photo album and look at a map to get an idea where you may come through and get back with you.
When you say "we"...you and your wife? What are the interests of whoever will be with you?

"We" would be myself and my girlfriend. I was told that Tybee Island would be a cool place to go, but I have never been there.
I am pretty sure that she will not want to go hog hunting. Fishing is a possibility. Hiking is a good thing. Eating great food, drinking wine would be a good thing. She has many of the same likes/dislikes as I do. She likes to do anything outdoors. Cool historical stuff would be neat as well. We are looking for you guys that live down there/have been down there to tell us what would be fun, or interesting. The gem mines that I heard of were in North or South Carolina. For the life of me I can not remember what area it is in.
4pt, country music is out of the question for her. She can skip right through those channels onthe radio. ;D
I am thinking that the flowers should be in bloom that time of year, which is why we wanted to go to Savannah. I am told its awesome when the flowers are in bloom.
I really want to see the ocean, but I am sure I can see it anywhere along that area. We are just looking for somewhere that we can have fun, do cool things, and just hang out.
Keep the ideas rolling!!!!!!

OH, by the way, we are wanting to stop anywhere along the way. Tennessee, Kentucky or whereever is also a possibility. We are not going to spend the entire time in GA.

You better stop and see me! March may be a little early for the bloom? Usually things heat up about the 2nd week of April here, but maybe the 150 or so miles will make a difference. Ill ask around at work tomorrow about the mines. Im sure some of them know.

You WILL see the ocean. ;D Tybee Island is just a 15-30 min drive from Savanah.
Eating...Paula Dean's restaraunt is in downtown Savanah, which by the way is very pretty around the "square". We had to wait in line to eat, but the wife liked it. To me it was just country cooking. Bubba's ??, Paula's brother's seafood place, is just out of Sav. on the way to Tybee. There is a Bass Pro shop in Savanah and if you like BBQ Sticky Fingers is close to BPS. Shark fishing is big in the area. It was easy to catch small ones at Tybee.
There are plenty of shops along the waterfront around Savanah. There is a real cool Fort between Sav. and Tybee that you will likely want to see. The walls still have the original holes/damage and even a few "shells" lodged in them. You can possibly see a few gators there as well.
I'll look in a day or two at a map and think about anything you may want to see on the way down. I have no idea on the gem mines.
If you have never seen the ocean I would consider staying on Tybee. Waking up and walking on the beach is a nice way to start your day.
Edit: We were there around June 20th...I don't know about flowers blooming around the first of April.
