I let Dalton do a little management today on my new place. Monday I let a solid 15" 8pt live because it was a young deer with good genetics. The owner of the land told me that there were a few older 8 pts running around with tiny racks so I told Dalton if we saw one he could shoot it. Like I said in another post, Dalton is an incredible shot on small bucks and does but not so much on big bucks. Well today he pulled off a shot that I'm not sure I could've made. At 9:15 we were debating getting up and looking around when I looked across the grown over field (weeds and briars over waist high) and saw a doe bounding across. Seconds behind the doe was this large bodied, small rack buck birddogging the doe. The buck ran down into a small dip in the field and I told Dalton to shoot it the first chance he got. The buck came up out of the dip around 100 yds and turned dead away from us, following the doe. Just as I was about to tell Dalton he wasn't going to get a shot he fired one off and hit the buck right up the....well, I think the term is "Texas heart shot". Now we each have one buck tag left, I'll eat mine if Mr Big doesn't use it. Dalton may kill another cull. Attachments:
