Can anyone help with some advice?
I am thinking about adding a catahoula to my pack. I don't know anyone who hunts them pure. So all i know is what i have read. But the books only say the good things. Good nose, Good work rate, Quiet on the trail, Loud bail, Like i say all good BUT...... Can they stop the hogs hard.
Or do they chase the hog till it runs out of gas. some of the country i hunt is pretty thick so if that hog runs the only thing the dog sees is two hocks and some ring gear so if the dog tries to run to the head it's going to be a long day. It has to hit that ring!
In some of the country i hunt the hogs are getting very dog shy from heavy hunting. All the ones that bail easy are BBQ stories. So nailing one in this country puts an extra big smile on a mans face.
I know this breed has been around a long time and is used by a lot of good hunters. My respectful regards to these hunters.

i hunt with pure catahoula dogs and am very pleASED with em.my2 and a half year old bitch is one of the best i have ever ownedshe is silent on the track but when you hear her bay you better be turnin the catch dogs loose and headin that way and if the hog breaks she will eat the ass out of him and stop him and once the catch dog catches she will assist him.i hunt plott /cur crosses as well but none of em even come close to bein good as her . iwouldnt take a 1000 dollars for her and got 3 pure catahoula pups 5 months old out of her that are showin lots of potential of bein good as their mama

Thank you Bulletproof for your view on the Catahoula.
What age does the hunting drive kick in on this breed does it take over a year or like the bully type dogs around the 12 week mark. In some of the reading I've done it said in one litter of say 5 pups each can fall into one of these groups pet-herding-hunting-guarding. Some may fit more than one group, But some are to hard or to soft. I know not all dogs are going to be good hunters but what a range.
Is this why they have been crossing American bulldog to make the Catahoula bulldog so they are more consistent

my experience with the catahoulas is they wil start bayin in the pen at 7 or 8 months but dont really start finding and bayin really good on their own til 18 to 20 months old

Would this breed be better left to mature and run young hogs in the pen. until it gets to 12 months old or bailing solid on them (not playing) I know dogs with brain can sometimes go sour on hog if they get a hard knock when they are young.

i work mine on young hogs til they start gettin to catchy then i start on more aggressive ones to teach em a little respect.if you dont then when you start huntin em and they run in on a big boar and your minus a dog. my finished catahoula bay dogs will catch but only after the catch dog gets there and catches first

Sounds like a good plan. How do ya pick a rough one that will handle hog. Do ya maybe have to raise a litter to 7 or 8 months and pick out the good ones Even as a purebred there must be some that are to soft.

thats bout it . even though they are slow starters by that age you can pretty much tell if they will hang or not . the majority but not all catahoulas are slow starters. know a guy with a catahoula and outlaw cur cross thats 11 months old and finding and baying by himself already.
