The hog hunt was a total disaster I tryed to make the worst of a good thing and it failed totally. This place got a lot of rain the day before we showed. I was the only bow hunter in the group. I brought my little 308 Rossi for a back up just if I needed to switch for some reason. They had areas (Outfiiters) set up for us but with all the rain we had to double up I had to double up with my Sherwin Williams Rep Who's NOT a Bow hunter. For 2 nights he made soooo much noise, I couldnt believe what I was hearin.
The 1st night hunt: We got set up @ 2:45pm . Bill (my Sherwin Williams Rep) wanted to gun hunt, so I much oblidge him on his request. This guy made so much noise by eatin loudly, clearin his throat, coughing loud, rinsing his mouth out with water. All this before dark. NOTE*( this was all happening before dark) Our ground blind was about 75 yards from a feeder andf main trails goin to the feeders and brush lines. Between us was a planted field where it was all rooted up from the hogs. Night falls and the Yotes started soundin off. Bill looks at me and was totally concern about the coyotes thinking that they were goin to get us. Then some pigs come and he started rushin to get his rifle and tiped over the chair and knock his spot light off the branch it was on. Them hogs took off. Then you could here another group coming up from behind us and he just about jumped out of the blind, talkin out loud and scared they were goin to attack us. Them hogs rushed off. I told him about hog hunting and how good these critters can hear and smell. Dont under estimate these "North American Rhino's". Were huntin a critter that is free range and smart. These hogs didnt make a whole lot of noise and were quiet as a church mouse in most cases. Them temperature was droping and more rain in the for cast. @ 8:pm the rain came down and the mp dropped more. He got cold do to he didnt bring any rain gear. so he left and head for my truck, were he spent the remaining time there . I saw hogs but didnt have much of a shot. The first night was a good thing thought I figured a new stradegty for tomorrow night. That night I spent til mid night. I knew these hogs had alot of huntin pressure to him and were VERY cagy and spot lights with filters over them were goin to be a chore any how.
The 2nd night hunt: Earlier that after noon I told Bill I was goin to set up one of my little fold out turkey blinds under some cedars about 18 yards from the main trail and a feeder. I brought extra blind material and set that all up all around the sides and part of the back for more consealment. I sprayed the blind down with "Dead Down Wind" ordor terminator. Pour out some Black Gold and dump a 50lb sack of corn out.
4:00pm came and we got set up and agreed I would be taking the first shoot since I had my trust Hoyt Bow with me hooked my hog lite with extra filter lens over the other one to tone the lite down. That day the wind was blowing hard at us and cold . Earler I told bill to layer up on the cloths, that it was goin to be real cold tonight. I layered up good. Had brought them hand warmers (the ones you shake up) water and beef jerky. Earlier I told him to get a good luch in before we leave and bring snacks nothing too loud eatin.
At dark, a armadillio came out and was coming towards us. All you could hear was him goin threw the leaves > I knew by the sound most likely it was a dillo. Bill about jumped out of the blind and was ready to leave. After calming him down and getting the area back to normal the frst hog came out and by the tone of his gruntin "DEEP DEEP DEEP GRUNTS" he was a bigg-un Earlier I sit out some Matrix (hog in heat scent) used a drag line and 2 scent wicks dipped and hung on a fence post and a small branch the drag-line put in a scent tie container. The shot never came to persent it self to me. More hogs came and Bill was making so much noise , standing up amd stomping the ground and moving from side to side. I asked him for what reasons of all this movement. He stated he was freezing to death. I asked him if he layered up , his answer was NO. pretty much most of the same noises went on the night before. And more hogs never presented us a shot. Finally Bill went to the truck and a few more hogs came in but never a shot for me. About 20 minutes before I was goin to leave a little hog came running in and he about ran me over. The clouds were coming and goin but at this time the moon was at its full shine and this little 50 lber hit my leg and realized what I was and sqeeled off, I could hear the hooves hittin them rocks. at 1:am in the morning I decided to hang it up and went to the truck and found Bill sleeping and snoring loudly.
I was disappointed in the hog hunt so I decided to leave for home that night. I never lead on to Bill how disappointed I was. I came to realized on the 12 1/2 hr trip back home that he was not much of a hunter or never took my suggestions on hog hunting seriously. Now as for Stanfield Outfitters, great accomaditions, plenty of smart cagy hogs , the pleasant hunt was good, blew up some birds 24 of the 35 birds were taking. As for the snacks I brought , he was eatin all mine up and drinkin my water. I took 2 lbs of beef jerky and he ate pretty much all of it.
There were 2 hogs takin by some of my buddies
Now the Pheasant was another thing............
Me and 6 others Arkansas Hillbillies shot up some pleasants in Knox City , Texas yesterday 12/30/06 1,316 mile trip, 12 1/2 hr ride.
26 birds out of 35 released. Not bad for abunch of Hillbillies with turkeys guns
My truck got a little muddy
